METALLICA JAR

The lovely heft of this pot comes from an old potter's trick.

When originally thrown, this pot was taller and had a very narrow neck. At that time, I put my lips to the pot and breathed into it, expanding and lifting it, then pinched the neck closed to contain my breath.

When the drying pot reached the leather hard stage, it's expanded shape now permanent, I cut away the neck down to the rather broad opening you see here and smoothed the cut edge with a wet chamois.

The pot was bisque fired, dunked into clear glaze, sprayed with lady's hairspray, then fired in a raku kiln, sawdust reduced, then water quenched. And here it lives. And, er...breathes.

Status: still in montefin's collection.
