montefin's
Blushing Kitchen Bowl

This simple white bowl measures 8 1/2" across the rim, 3 1/2" at the base and stands 4 1/2" high, It is saved from ordinariness by a subtle lavender blush the glaze took in thicker areas where it flowed under the lip, down over the belly, and swirled inside around the bottom of the well.

The clay body is Soldate-60 -- a very sandy, but structurally sound and forgiving clay. When trimming pots made with clay like this, be sure to burnish the bottom of the foot ring with a spoon or polished stone to ease the grit back under the clay surface. No one loves a bowl, no matter how beautiful, that scratches every plastic, wood, and glass surface it's placed upon.

The bowl shape, its thickness and proportions, handles with just the right gravity for whupping batter with a wooden spoon or beating butter, cream and chives into mashed potatoes.

Status: still in the potter's personal collection and much in use.
