ASH GLAZED FOSSIL FISH DISH

What would you do after having Sand Dabs for dinner with small freshly glazed plates on the drying rack? Well, I removed the bones from the Sand Dabs, pressed them into the glaze and covered them with ashes from the fireplace. Fired in a gas kiln at stoneware temperature, this was the result. I can practically taste those delicious Sand Dabs to this day!

In this case the ash glaze works in addition to the clear glaze and gives this dish the look and feel of an instant fossil, as opposed to an instant antique.

Status: still in potter's personal collection.
